Bright Smiles & December Lights

Holiday Dental Notes from Dr. W. Gregory Rose DDS

Hello, Albuquerque, and happy December!

The luminarias are starting to glow on rooftops, the smell of piñon is in the air, and the Old Town Plaza lights are officially up. Before we all get swept away by posadas, tamales, and biscochitos, here are a few smile-friendly thoughts to kick off the season Duke City-style.

A Little Dental History for the Holiday Season

On December 8, 1868, the very first U.S. patent for modern dental floss was issued. So while you’re lining the sidewalks with farolitos or wrapping twinkle lights around the porch, give a quiet nod to the dentists of the 1800s who were already telling everyone to “string” something between their teeth every night!

And speaking of classic holiday treats: the red-and-white candy cane was originally created in the 1670s to keep kids quiet during long Christmas services. By the time it reached New Mexico in the early 20th century, it had become a stocking-stuffer staple—and a gentle reminder from your dentist to enjoy peppermint sticks in moderation.

Keeping Your Smile Merry (and Chile-Proof) All Month Long

A few New Mexico–specific holiday tips:

  • Green or red chile on everything? Awesome—just rinse with water afterward. Capsaicin won’t hurt enamel, but the acids in tomatoes and vinegar love to linger.
  • Biscochitos + posole + hot cocoa = a triple-threat of sugar and starch. Keep a travel toothbrush in your coat pocket for after the family parties.
  • Dry winter air + indoor heating can leave your mouth feeling like the high desert in July. Stay hydrated; it’s the easiest way to keep saliva flowing and protect your enamel.
  • Sticky natillas, empanadas filled with mincemeat, and that extra piece of pecan pie can hide in the grooves of molars for hours. A quick swish or floss makes a big difference.
  • Dark chocolate with chile? Still one of the better holiday treats for your teeth—it clears faster and has less sugar than milk chocolate.

Our office is open until December 23rd and ready to help with anything from a quick cleaning to relieving sensitivity that flares up when you switch from hot cider to cold night air.

From Dr. Rose and the whole team—thank you for letting us take care of Albuquerque smiles all year long. May your luminarias burn bright, your tamales be steamy, and your teeth stay cavity-free through every carol and celebration.

Here’s to a joyous New Mexico holiday season!
